Canon Malaysia names a small group of photographers and filmmakers to its EOS Master Programme each year. The 2026 line-up is 11 EOS Masters, 12 EOS Mentors and 3 EOS Filmmakers.
Ronnie Chan, founder of RC Studio, is one of the 12 EOS Mentors.
The relationship started before the appointment. Canon invited him to run sessions through 2025 — a Chinese wedding cinematography workshop, and a cinematic portrait session built around CFMOTO — before the 2026 programme was signed.

What the role involves
It is not an award that sits on a shelf. Mentors teach, and the programme sets out what a mentor delivers.
Workshops. Canon-run sessions, free to attend, held through the year. Recent ones include a Chinese New Year cheongsam portrait shoot, the Queen of the Sea multiple exposure workshop, a pet photography workshop, and Speed & Style — a cinematic videography session covering camera, lighting and movement.
Talks and sharing sessions. Schools and colleges around Penang, representing Canon. Recent sessions at TAR UMT and Heng Ee School.
Camera reviews and feature content. Short-form video covering Canon bodies and what they can do, produced as part of the mentor agreement.
Teaching, in practice
At least two workshops a quarter, through the year.
Most of the teaching is hands-on. A workshop is not a lecture about settings — it is a shoot, with participants working through the same problems a real job presents. Light that will not behave. A subject that moves. A location with one good angle and forty bad ones.
Two things, and they are separate
The mentor role. Workshops, college and school sessions, camera reviews and feature content. That is what the programme asks of a mentor, and it is set out in the agreement.
Paid production work. Canon also hires RC Studio the way any other client does — as a vendor, to film their events. The EOS R6 V House of Creators launch: full event coverage and the highlight film. The Penang Yosakoi parade. Commercial jobs, won the same way anyone else’s work is won.
The first says a camera manufacturer trusts our technical judgement enough to put us in front of its customers. The second says that when Canon needs an event filmed in Malaysia, they hire us to do it.
